Getting Started with Kaltura

How to Access Kaltura in Canvas

There are two Kaltura links in Canvas, Kaltura My Media and Kaltura Media Gallery.

Kaltura My Media, located in the Global Navigation Menu, is a personal media repository where you can upload, create, and/or store media. The link is available to you in all of your courses, but Kaltura My Media items are private unless you publish them in a course.

Kaltura Media Gallery, located in the Course Navigation Menu, is a media repository for the course, where videos can be uploaded, created, and/or stored by anyone enrolled in the course to share with everyone else. Media that is created in Media Gallery will automatically be added to your personal My Media repository.


Media Options

There are several options for the type of media you can create using Kaltura. Look for the Add New button in the upper right corner of the Kaltura My Media page to see the options (you may be asked to Authorize your account).

Media Upload - Upload a video, audio, or image file that has been saved to your device. You can drag-and-drop or use the file finder.

Express Capture - Record a brief (~ 10 minutes) audio and/or video recording with the option to share your screen.

YouTube - Add a YouTube URL to embed a YouTube video

Interactive Video - Create a “choose your own path” experience for your viewers.

Kaltura Capture - Record longer audio and/or video recordings with the option to share your screen(s). Requires downloading and installing the application on your computer.

Video Quiz - Create an embedded quiz within a recorded video.


Record with Express Capture

You can create media either in My Media or in the course Media Gallery. If you create it in My Media, you can easily publish the content to a course, or courses, with the click of a button (see Manage Media below)

In your Canvas course, click on My Media, then the Add New button in the upper right corner. Select Express Capture, which will open a recording screen:

  1. Select your camera, mic, and screenshare options

  2. Click the red Record button

  3. After the countdown, start recording

  4. Click the red button to stop recording

  5. Choose Record Again or Use This

  6. Name your recording, add a brief description that will appear under the title as the video plays

  7. Set your publishing status to Private or Published. You will have the option to publish it to any of the courses you are enrolled in.


Record with Kaltura Capture

In your Canvas course, click on My Media, then the Add New button in the upper right corner. Select Kaltura Capture, and follow the instructions to download the application to your computer.

Once installed, it will launch automatically when you click Kaltura Capture. Or, open it on your computer by double-clicking the app.

You’ll have the options to share or hide multiple media sources (cameras, screens, or microphones). You can also manage any recordings you have created using Kaltura Capture by clicking on the Manage link in the upper right corner.

To start recording, click the red button and wait for the countdown.

The control menu will appear in the lower right corner. Use the controls to stop, pause, or resume your video.

If you’re screen-sharing, click the pencil icon to access a variety of annotation tools.

Once you stop the recording, you’ll be directed to an entry page where you can save your recording, delete it, or save and upload it to your site.

Upload a Zoom Recording to Kaltura

To move your recorded Zoom meetings to Kaltura, you’ll use the Upload option in Kaltura to upload your recording. Here are the steps you’ll take:

Step 1: Record and Download Your Zoom Meeting

  1. Record your Meeting

Be sure to choose the Record to the Cloud option.

  1. Download your meeting recording

    1. Once the recording has finished processing, you’ll receive a message from Zoom that the recording is ready and you will be able to access it via Zoom.us using your Clark account (sign in using the SSO domain “clarku”)

    2. Click on Recordings & Transcripts

    3. Click on your recording

    4. Hover your mouse next to the preferred output and click the download icon

Step 2: Upload Your File to Kaltura

There are several options for how to upload your recording to Kaltura in Canvas, depending on whether you are adding it to your My Media gallery or directly to an activity, page, or announcement.

To add it to your My Media:

  1. click on My Media

  2. find the Add New button

  3. click Media Upload

  4. click Choose a File To Upload

  5. find the recording in your Downloads folder and click Open

  6. Update details if needed, then click Save

To add it to an activity, page, or announcement:

  1. in edit mode, click the plug icon and select Embed Kaltura Media (click View All if you don’t see it):    

  1. select Upload Media

  2. follow steps 4-6 in the My Media instructions above


Edit Media

Kaltura allows you some basic video editing tools, including the ability to trim and cut sections of a recording, add fade in/out transitions, and create a quiz within a previously recorded video.  

To access these tools:

In Media Gallery, hover your cursor over the recording and click on the three dots, then select the pencil icon. In My Media, click on the pencil icon to the right of your video.

You will see your recording with a Basic Info section to the right. Click the Launch Editor button at the bottom of that section, which will open the editing panel (see image above).

Icons to the left allow you to create a quiz, or to edit your recording using the timeline and tools at the bottom of the screen.

Manage Media

Kaltura makes it easy to publish media to courses, add collaborators, create chapters, etc.

In Media Gallery, hover your cursor over the media you would like to manage and click on the three dots, then select the pencil icon. In My Media, click on the pencil icon to the right of your video.

This will open a preview panel, and at the bottom of the page you’ll see a menu of options:

These options are fairly intuitive, but take some time to explore the possibilities and click on the links below for more information.


Media Analytics

Kaltura has a robust analytics feature that allows to you to view data about how your media has been consumed.

In Media Gallery, click the media you would like to view analytics for, then click on the ACTIONS menu in the lower right and select Analytics.

 

 

In My Media, click on the graph icon to the right of your video.

 The Analytics Dashboard will open, with several options at the top for filtering and exporting results, as well as some general statistics:

Scroll down the page to find more specific information about user engagement.
