Remote Desktop Connection - Access your Windows Computer Remotely (with Mac)

Before You Start

Warning: If you share this computer with someone else and they are logged on when you attempt to remote into the device, you will be notified that someone else is logged on. If you choose to log them off, they will lose all work/files they have not saved.

Note: Students are not permitted to remotely connect to University computers unless faculty or staff have worked with ITS to provide access.

Instructions for On-Campus Windows Computer

  1. Open your File Explorer image-20240613-125049.png .

  2. Right-click on the This PC location in the left-side pane and select Properties.

  3. Locate Device Name section and record the Full device name by writing it down, emailing it to yourself, or making a note in your phone.

  4. Click the Windows icon image-20240613-125214.png in the bottom left of your desktop. Search for and select Edit Power Plan. Set the power option to Min Savings/Remote Desktop

  5. Do not turn off your on-campus computer.

Instructions for the Off-Campus Apple computer

Note: Prior to remoting into the on-campus device, your off-campus computer needs to connect to Clark’s VPN. Instructions here: VPN Install & Connect.

  1. Go to the App Store and download Microsoft Remote Desktop.

    1. Click here to go to the App Store

  2. Once the app has downloaded to your Mac, launch the app.

  3. Once the app is open, click Add PC.

  4. In the option for PC name, enter the full computer name you recorded from Step 3 in the section above.

  5. In the User account field, select Add User Account from the drop-down menu.

  6. Enter your Clark email address and password, then click Add.

  7. In the Friendly name field, add a nickname to identify the computer you are connecting to (optional but recommended)

  8. Click Add.

  9. In the Microsoft Remote Desktop window, you’ll see a square labeled with the friendly name you just added. Double-click on the square.

  10. If prompted, opt to trust the connection.

  11. A window will open, displaying the desktop of your on-campus Windows computer. You have successfully remoted into the device.

  12. To remote into this device again, open the Microsoft Remote Desktop app on your Mac.
